Adding a Shiba to Your Life

Everyone says that shibas are not easy dogs to live with. Well, they are and they aren’t. It can be summed up with a line one of my rescue clients said about his new Shiba: “This ain’t no dog”.

Shibas are primitive dogs. They are naturally clever, clean, and usually quiet. They are healthy, sturdy, and not extreme in body or selected behaviors. They are, to some extent, the dog as he was 2000 years ago – an animal that chooses to hang with humans for the companionship and the free goodies.

Note that I used the word “chooses”. Shibas are best viewed as a companion that chooses you – not an automaton that will obey you because he’s a dog and you’re his master. To some extent, no dog will do this very well. But Shibas make a point of reminding you of their independent nature daily. If you enjoy a challenge, have a good sense of humor, and find border collies boring, a Shiba may be for you.

You should locate a Shiba breeder, club, rescue, or enthusiast near to you and get to know them. Check out our Nihon Ken in the Northwest page for links. Be warned – the Shiba world is small, and most of the reputable enthusiasts all know each other. The good news is that we are a friendly lot, and if you are serious and willing to learn, we are happy to have you join us.
There are not a lot of shiba litters a year, and there are not a lot in rescue on the west coast. (There are more in rescue back east).

You may have to wait for a puppy, or even for an adult. But in the mean time you can join the community and share the madness.

If you are interested in one of our puppies or older dogs, please download, complete, and return our future dog owner questionnaire by e-mail. This will give us a place to start a conversation.
